Kathy Bennett Guest Post

I want to thank Tasha for having me as a guest on her blog. I love talking about how I came to be a writer and how I put my stories together. My promise to my readers is that I write authentic crime while telling arresting stories. As a retired twenty-one year veteran of the Los Angeles Police department, I weave small bits and pieces of my experiences as a police officer into the stories I write. Police work is not always pretty and sometimes the reality can be troubling to those who don't wear the badge. Those who do wear the badge usually learn coping mechanisms for the evil acts people inflict on one another. Most police officers like to think they are trained to handle whatever the streets throw at them – and usually they are prepared. However, a year or so ago, police officers all over Southern California and, in particular, the LAPD were on edge – and with good reason. A former LAPD officer felt he'd been wrongly fired from the department and wrote a rambli...

Whip Smart Excerpt

Whip Smart: Lola Montez and the Poisoned Nom de Plume “Why don’t the two of you have a contest?” one of the wags said, proud of himself for such an audacious suggestion, and looking around at his chums like a large water spaniel that’s just dropped a duck at its master’s feet. Oh, my, this wasn’t what I’d expected — I’d simply wanted to come, be alone, and blast several dozen bullets at something inert that, in my mind’s eye, had acquired an unnecessary monocle and a high, giggly laugh. The other sportsmen, however, were very excited by this new idea and clapped Beauvallon (whose dark face began looking decidedly stormy) on the back several times. “I will not fight a woman,” he said finally, “and that’s an end to it.” “I will fight you, if you like,” I rejoined, before I even knew that the words were forming. The others hurrahed, and one of them dashed off to find a fresh target. “This is absurd, gentlemen,” growled Beauvallon, before turning to me. “Forgive them th...

I, Walter Giveaway

Image
I, Walter by Mike Hartner I, Walter is the first in a series of books in a saga which will span continents and time to arrive in present day North America.  Each in the series will be connected, though that connection may not be obvious for several more books.   It's almost like looking at a menorah (sic). Many lines, seemingly individual, connect to center at different points.  Walter Crofter was born into Elizabethan England. In a country and a time where favor and politics were both deadly, can an honest boy stay true to himself? Especially given his family background?   About the Author  Mike Hartner was born in Miami in 1965. He’s traveled much of the continental United States. He has several years post secondary education, and experience teaching and tutoring young adults. Hartner has owned and run a computer firm for more than twenty-five years. He now lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, with his wife...

Mike Hartner Guest Post

Image
On Family and Its Role in I, Walter by Mike Hartner         Family. That word alone means different things to different people. To me, it meant a father, a mother, and several brothers. But, much more importantly to me, it meant love. My family wa s bathed in, and surrounded by love. And that is the most encouraging thing in the world.          So place yourself in the family of Walter Crofter. His father, Geoff, is wishy-washy at best, mostly spineless, and allows people of wealth to get away with nearly anything simply because he’s afraid of losing their business even more than he already has.            Walter’s brother Gerald saw the way customers treated their father, and his reaction was to rise among the ranks of the illegals in London. He was trying to inflict pain on a class of people that had physically and emotionally...
