Sea-less Surfing

Image
Technology is always evolving; we see it in our smartphones, our electric cars, and our tablet laptop hybrid concoctions. But it's not just our cool toys that are developing technologically, our environment is too. Large ponds that are actually wave pools are popping up with man-made waves big enough to surf. This advancement will not only change the rules of the surf, but could go on to change the Olympics in time for Tokyo in 2020.  There are three important positions that can be taken when exploring this new trend - technological, business, and the surfer.  Wave pools are a popular attraction at many theme parks and have been for many years. However, now there is the capability of creating actual ocean-like waves, with no time for flat-spells, constantly and consistently - two things you're not likely to get in the real ocean. Each wave only takes about 90 seconds, so there's plenty of time for plenty of rides. Four major technology companies in this ar...

SkyTruth leads to SeaTruth

Image
Image from Wall Street Journal via Google Images Illegal fishing, sometimes referred to as pirate fishing, is a huge problem throughout the world, but with new satellite technology, it is becoming easier to catch these criminals at sea. SkyTruth has come up with a way to determine if vessels tracked via satellite are illegally hunting fish. Image from dw.com via Google Images National Geographic gives readers an insight on the history of SkyTruth, the technology behind it, and the limits or problems the technology currently faces. In 2012, SkyTruth used satellites and radar to find the ship responsible for an oil spill off Angola by noticing a white dot at the end of a black stretch on the images. Eventually they realized they could use this same detection system to look for pirate fishermen, and teamed up with Pew Charitable Trusts to help. This partnership ended up involving Google and Oceana as well, creating a website called Global Fishing Watch, allowing advocacy groups...

Cruising on the Wi-Fi Waves

Image
Smartphones, smart watches, smart boards, now smart ships. Cruise ships, that is. For any of you who have previous traveled aboard a vessel of the sea, you know the struggles of on-board internet. Super slow speeds, practically dial-up, on the few computers in the "library" room keep ships stuck in the late 20th century. Well, not anymore. Royal Caribbean has announced their new SmartShips and Carnival has announced their new "Got Wifi?" campaign, with other cruise lines quickly following the fleets. Fortune magazine does a good job of mentioning three key points to this new innovation incorporated into the ships - a step toward the future, new customer opportunities, and customer satisfaction. Faster wi-fi is the key to these upcoming successes in the cruising industry. "O3b Networks, a company that provides ship-to-shore communication systems, started working with Royal Caribbean back in 2011 to upgrade its internet connections. It developed a new type of h...

The Stars of Mount2000, 2013

Image
Obviously many more people were involved in the creation of this celebration, such as the seminarians and the priests and the archbishop of Baltimore himself, Archbishop William Lori, but here are some informations about the faces of Mount 2000 for this past weekend, 2013. Information from the Mount2000 Website . Fr. Mike Schmitz Father Michael Schmitz, the director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of Duluth as well as the Chaplain for the Newman Center at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, inspires and educates through his priesthood and preaching. His Newman Center focuses on being fed through the Sacraments as well as study and knowledge of the Church and has thrived under his humble and Spirit-filled guidance. He has preached to youth and young adults across the country about the love of God and the call of Jesus Christ for saints to be raised up in the Church. Father Mike's hope is that these saints will redeem the entire world for Christ. Ma...

IDs

I have been watching all this gun control talk on the TV, it's dumb. All we need is pictured IDs that will identify a person. If a person has been convicted of a violent crime, they can't possess a firearm. If a person has a mental condition, they can't possess a firearm, unless they have a permit. People that have mentally handy cap persons in their house should be required to have a gun safe or secure zone for their firearms. (keyed closet, keyed trigger lock, etc.) Lower the age of juveniles to the age of twelve, and put their record as public. We have to have a pictured ID on our driving license, they give you a SS number when you are born. Everyone in our state carries a pictured ID or we go to jail until you prove who you are. And driving without a license gets you jail time. Here if you got a red line on your ID, you can't buy booze, because you've been in too much trouble because of it. This would solve a lot of problems, the ID would tell the...

Solar Storms

Solar storms are also known as geomagnetic storms (Rincon, 2012). Solar storms are created from magnetic energy that is released from the sun (Hathaway, 2007). A solar flare or a coronal mass ejection, also known as a CME, enters the Earth's atmosphere to cause a true geomagnetic storm (Rincon, 2012). Solar storms are important because of their many effects on Earth. Along with these major effects, solar storms send massive mounts of radiation to Earth, enough to be equivalent to 100 x-rays (National Geographic Preppers, 2012). Coronal Mass Ejections and Solar Flares are a major factor when it comes to creating Solar Storms. Coronal Mass Ejections are actually "huge bubbles of gas threaded with magnetic field lines that are ejected from the sun over the course of several hours" (Hathaway, 2007). Coronal mass ejections have been seen during eclipses for several minutes but can occur without an eclipse happening; they can occur anywhere from 2-3 times a day to once a week ...

Solar Storms: Part 4

The solar cycle is expected to be at its highest point, or peak, sometime in 2013 or 2014; no one can truly be sure when (Rincon, 2012). More solar flares and coronal mass ejections are expected in the next few years because of the solar cycle gaining in activity. Some storms are expected to cause some problems with technology on earth, such as satellites and aircraft signals and navigation (Rincon, 2012). Every once in a while, magnetic energy is released from the Sun's atmosphere making solar flares, or intense bursts of radiation, appear. Coronal Mass Ejections, or CMEs, occur when particles with high amounts of energy are released into space. Coronal Mass ejections and Solar Flares often go hand-in-hand though coronal mass ejections can occur by themselves. Geomagnetic storms, or solar storms, are then created as soon as the particles in coronal mass ejections or solar flares collide with Earth. They mess up the magnetosphere which "pro...

Solar Storms: Part 3

There are many ways to prepare for a solar storm. This article has basic ways to provide for yourself and your family during an emergency, such as a solar storm. At the bottom of the article it mentions that you should have a weapon or weapons available in case you need to defend your food, possessions, or anything else that you have that others might want. (National Geographic Preppers, 2012)             The solar storm sends a massive amount of radiation to Earth. If you are outside in it, it is like getting 100 chest x-rays (National Geographic Preppers, 2012). To prevent yourself from these harmful rays of radiation, it says to build a safe house (National Geographic Preppers, 2012).             This article also states the obvious, like making sure you have enough food and water to last you several months without power. It says to also have a miniature portable cooking stov...

Solar Storms: Part 2

Solar Storms are also known as Coronal Mass Ejections, or CMEs, according to the previous article. Coronal Mass Ejections are actually “huge bubbles of gas threaded with magnetic field lines that are ejected from the Sun over the course of several hours” (Hathaway, 2007). They have been seen during eclipses for several minutes but can occur without an eclipse. Sunspot Cycles determine when coronal mass ejections will occur (Hathaway, 2007). They can occur from 2-3 times a day to once a week (Hathaway, 2007).           Coronal Mass Ejections were recently discovered with 1971 and 1973 being the earliest observations of it; it was observed by a coronagraph (Hathaway, 2007). Many Coronal Mass Ejections have been seen in the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory by the Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (Hathaway, 2007). Coronagraphs put a disk over the sun to create a fake eclipse for scientists to try to locate any changes in the sun’s coro...

Solar Storms: Part 1

The aurora borealis or “northern lights” have lit the skies in the arctic region for millions of years. The first occupants of Earth believed it to be from the gods, but we know different. They come from space or solar “storms”. The space weather is usually an 11 year cycle. The solar storm results in a variety of changes. The first sign that the solar storms are worsening is seen in the light show in the arctic region. In the 1800s the storms triggered magnetic changes to the network of wires that transported telegraph and telephone communications. They were so powerful that the telegraph operators did not need a battery power to operate their machines and several were even electrocuted. Those lines were above the ground – in the atmosphere, but even if they were below waters as in the Atlantic cable between Scotland and Newfoundland, surges were felt and caused blackouts. The solar storms also affect the pipelines by causing them to corrode at a faster rate. This corrosion resulted i...

Kony 2012

Image
Joseph Kony is an evil man in Africa who takes children and turns them against their parents and forces them to kill. We need to help spread the word to let people know that we care. Like the narrator kept saying, if this happened to just ONE kid in America, it would be all over the place and stopped within seconds. Well, this is happening to HUNDREDS and THOUSANDS of kids in Africa, and no one has cared. Until now. Help spread the word. Together we CAN and WILL make a difference. Kony 2012.

Just so you know...

I'm mega sorry for not posting anything in such a long time!!! I've been extremely busy with cheerleading, school, and extracurricular activities!  I'm sorry! But cheerleading is over now, so I'll have a lot more free time to get back to reading books, interviewing people, and reviewing tons of things! So look forward to tons of new posts in the future! Thanks so much for your understanding. Tasha Nicole

Capital Punishment

Image
The oldest form of punishment is the death penalty. Sometimes, it is completely necessary for people to die because of their actions. In the United States of America, the death penalty had been used since colonial times. Forms of carrying out the death penalty in the USA are lethal injection, electrocution, lethal gas, hanging, and firing squad. Lethal injection and the electric chair are the most common. Since 1976 over 900 executions have been applied in the United States. Capital punishment has been proven to deter crime. Because of this, it should be applied and supported. Capital punishment should be supported for many reasons. One reason is the Capital Punishment prevents murderers from killing more innocent people. Of released murderers in Oregon, five percent killed more people within five years of being released (Carmical). Each time a murderer is put to death, 3-18 victims lives are spared (Muhlhausen). something that saves lives should be suppo...

Dance Studio Instructor

Image
This is a high school report submitted by Tasha Nicole Haight and is credited to Tasha. Dance Studio Instructors are dance instructors that work and teach in a dance studio. They must specialize in at least one type of dance, such as ballet, jazz, hip hop, or modern. Studio instructors choreograph, or create, dances and teach them to their students. Once the students know the dance, it is the instructor's job to help perfect the dance. The instructor needs to set the dance to music, pick out costumes, and have a recital or competition to show off what his or her students have accomplished. Anna Pavola, Nicolai Legat, Pierre Beauchamp, Jules Perrot, Valentina Pereyakslavic, Arthur Murray, and Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire are some popular people who were once studio instructors sometime in their life. To be a studio instructor, college is not required. However, as previously stated, they must specialize in a form of dance. People can specialize in a dance type by having c...

iSearch 2010 - Werewolves

Image
This is a paper about Werewolves that I wrote myself last year for a school project. I hope you enjoy and I hope to get some feedback on it, so please, leave comments on what I can do to make it better, what you liked about it, what you hated about it, etc. All feedback is greatly appreciated. Thank you, Tasha <3 The Story of My Search "Tyler is a werewolf", said Damon, a vampire on one of my favorite TV shows, The Vampire Diaries. Wow, a werewolf, I thought to myself, Werewolves are awesome. I decided I would research werewolves for my I Search project. I knew some things about werewolves, like that most people think they only change during a full moon, but some turn every night. Others, only turn when it's cold out. I also knew that the 3 main ways to change were to be born into it, to get bit by one, or to be injected with the blood of a werewolf. Some other ways I knew could change them were if they killed someone, even by accident, after they were cursed to ...
