Moa

Title:
Moa

Author:
Tricia Stewart Shiu

Series:
Moa

About the Author: (Amazon)
Tricia Stewart Shiu is an award winning, screenwriter, author and playwright, but her passion lies in creating mystical stories. Her latest series, The Moa Books, which includes Moa, The Statue of Ku and The Iron Shinto, were, by far her favorite to write.

Summary: (Goodreads)
Hillary Hause is not a witch. But, everyone in her conservative small town thinks so. When she is given a trip to Hawaii for graduation, this energetic eighteen-year-old anticipates adventure but gets more than she bargained for when Moa, an ancient Hawaiian spirit, pays her an unexpected visit.
With the help of her older sister, Molly and her seven-year-old niece, Heidi, Hillary embarks on a journey in which she not only saves herself, her family and Moa, but also the Hawaiian Islands. In the end, she learns to accept herself and her spiritual gifts warts and all.

I'd Recommend to...
adult women for a nice summer read

My Rating:
4.4/5

My Thoughts:
Hillary is an odd child that never really fit in at school. Now she has graduated and is visiting her sister in Hawaii. When a spirit comes to her about saving Hawaii, Hillary is unsure of what to do or say. Her sister, Molly, does not want to get involved in fear of influencing her daughter, Heidi, in a way she wouldn't like. But when Moa, the spirit, brings up Steve, Molly's dead husband, Molly is persuaded into joining to help.
They have three (3) days. Can they do it??
Each chapter started with a "ritual". That was interesting and honestly, it's like 2 books in 1 - a spell book and a story. You can tell that Tricia Stewart Shiu knows a lot about protection and self-energy.
She also is clearly very knowledgeable about Hawaiian history. So, you have a spell book, a history book, and a novel, all in one wondrous story.  I really enjoy it when the author knows what they are talking about and it's not just a "fluff" story, as some books nowadays are. It really does add to the story and makes it a million times better.
I am already reading the next in the series, "The Statue of Ku", and will most likely read more by this author!
